Natalie Bruns (St. Louis, MO/Kirkwood) dropped a career-high 18 points to lift New York University's Women's Basketball Team over Cabrini University, 79-43, at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility on Sunday, November 28.
The Violets (6-0) picked up right where they left off before the Thanksgiving holiday, remaining undefeated on the season. The win also avenged NYU's only regular season non-conference loss in 2019-20 as they fell to the Cavaliers on the road in November 2019.
"I think we've grown a ton from the first game (of the season) against Kean to now," Bruns said. "We have so many people off the bench who can score 10-plus points, it's hard to guard. That's what people are starting to learn about us really quickly."
NYU held Cabrini scoreless for the first 5:53 of the game as they took a 16-0 lead on a
Jordan Janowski (Woodcliff Lake, NJ/Saddle River Day School) bucket halfway through the first quarter. The Cavaliers only scored six points in the period and a
Taylor Huff (Glen Ellyn, IL/Glenbard West) and-one with one second remaining put the Violets up 29-6 after one.
The Violets hit four of their five three-pointers in the second quarter while holding the visitors to just 12.5 percent shooting en route to a 51-17 halftime advantage.
NYU continued to roll in the third as the lead ballooned to 40 points (68-28) at the end of the frame after
Mary Kate Fahey (Arlington Heights, IL/John Hersey) buried a triple with 25 seconds on the clock.
Cabrini out-scored NYU 15-11 in the fourth, but it was too little too late as the Violets won their fifth of six-straight home contests.
"Our young players really surprised me today, just with their attention to detail and tenacity defensively against a really well-coached Cabrini team," commented Head Coach
Meg Barber. "We continue to show our depth as a team and it was a great breakout game for Natalie to showcase her all-around skill-set."
Bruns shot 7-for-13 from the floor and hit a career-high four three-pointers (4-for-6) to collect her game-high 18 points. She also added five boards and a career-best three steals.
"I had a meeting with the coaches a few days ago to discuss where I was at and they have all the confidence in me," added Bruns. "And I have all the confidence in myself and I knew I just needed to bring what I was practicing with to the court."
Belle Pellecchia (Randolph, NJ/Rutgers Prepatory) continued her strong debut season, adding 12 points (4-for-6 FG), three rebounds, an assist, and a steal. The rookie has scored in double-figures in all six of her collegiate outings.
Huff scored in double-figures for the first time in her career, finishing with 11 points on 5-for-7 shooting as well as three rebounds and a block.
Jenny Walker (Sausalito, CA/Redwood) also corralled a team-high six boards and posted a season-high four blocks.
Erica Miller (Alamo, CA/Carondelet) kept up her hot shooting, netting nine points on 3-for-4 from long-range; she's currently among the top-10 in three-point percentage in the University Athletic Association (UAA).
The Violets are back in action next Sunday, December 5, when they host Wesleyan University (CT) at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility. Tip-off is set for 2 pm.
