A pair of University Athletic Association (UAA) rivals dueled at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY, today, October 31, as New York University's Men's Soccer Team hosted Emory University, falling 2-1 in a thrilling overtime match.
"The UAA is having a great season and Emory was stunned by a late loss at Brandeis so we knew they were completely determined to turn it around from Friday night," said Head Coach
Kim Wyant.
The first half was a gritty battle as the Violets (10-4-1, 4-2-0) out-shot Emory (9-2-4, 3-1-2) 8-3 and led 2-0 in corner kicks as neither side found the back of the net in the opening 45 minutes.
Emory's Nate Sampson broke the tie early in the second (58') firing a strike past a diving
Luca Mancuso (Miami, FL/Montverde Academy) in the upper left corner. He was assisted by Max Mehlman on a well-placed through ball.
New York ramped up its attack thereafter, getting off 12 shots in the second half. With time winding down,
Alex Rovirosa-Illa (Llinars del Valles, Barcelona/Hamelin Laie International ) lined up for a corner kick, launched it into the box and found the foot of
Daniel Comas-Sanchez (Miami, FL/Belen Jesuit Prep) who tapped it into the net for the 86th-minute equalizer.
The 1-1 tie held up at the end of regulation, prompting sudden death overtime. The extra period was well contested with both back lines limiting their opponent's chances.
However, Sampson set up for a straight-on free kick from 20 yards out with 42 seconds on the clock. He then sniped a shot into the upper right that an outstretched Mancuso could not stop for the game-winner.
"Ultimately, what it came down to for me was that we didn't finish some really great opportunities that we had," added Wyant. "We all take responsibility for not putting away chances. When you let a good team like this hang around, then they come down the field and the one opportunity that they have, they score."
The teams totaled 30 fouls in a physical contest, while NYU led 22-9 in shots despite both teams placing seven attempts on goal each.
Mancuso totaled five saves in the loss and
Arkan Tahsildaroglu (Istanbul, Turkey/Berkshire School (MA)) got off a game-high seven shot attempts.
The Violets' final regular season contest is next on Saturday, November 6, hosting Brandeis University in another UAA matchup at Gaelic Park. Senior Day kickoff commences at 1:30 pm.
