After extending their lead atop the University Athletic Association (UAA) standings with a win in St. Louis on Friday, New York University's Men's Soccer Team fell to the University of Chicago, 3-0, on Sunday, October 17, in Chicago, IL.
It was the Violets' (9-3-1, 3-1-0) first UAA defeat of the season, but NYU still holds a one-point grip on first place in the league table.
"We didn't show up to compete to the level needed for the match today," said Head Coach
Kim Wyant. "Our position in the standings is still good, however, and the three remaining UAA games are at home."
The Maroons (9-4-1, 2-2-0) got on the scoreboard in the seventh minute when Ryan Shea found Ryan Yetishefsky who found the back of the net for his fifth goal of the year.
Naz Kabbani converted a penalty kick just nine minutes later to extend Chicago's lead to 2-0. That score remained through the break as the hosts out-shot NYU 4-3 over the first 45 minutes.
Yetishefsky secured a brace six minutes into the second half, with Robbie Pino picking up the assist, and the 3-0 cushion proved to be too much for New York to overcome.
"We were slow to the first balls and not challenging for the second 50/50 balls," added Wyant. "We needed more concentration and we lacked fundamentals, like taking care of the ball when we had it."
Chicago was the aggressor in this one, leading 12-9 in shots and 9-0 in shots-on-goal. The intensity of UAA compeition was apparent as well, with both sides combining for 29 fouls throughout.
Arkan Tahsildaroglu (Istanbul, Turkey/Berkshire School (MA)) was the only Violet to attempt more than one shot (four) and
Luca Mancuso (Miami, FL/Montverde Academy) recorded six saves in the loss.
Association action continues on Friday, October 29, when NYU hosts the University of Rochester at Gaelic Park for a 1:30 pm kickoff.
