The New York University men's volleyball team defeated host Hunter College in four sets on Wednesday March 13, at the Sportsplex in Manhattan.
The Violets (9-7) dropped the first set to the Hawks (12-6) 25-22, but rebounded to take the next three 25-18, 25-16, 25-23.
After trailing by as many as five points in the first set, the Violets pulled to within 23-22 on a kill by
Alex Li, but could not stop the Hawks from getting the final two points.
The second and third sets saw NYU get out to early leads and go on to comfortable victories.
The final set was tight at the beginning before NYU eventually got out to a five-point lead. However, the hosts refused to go quietly into the night, erasing its deficit and pulling into a 22-22 tie. But, the Violets never relinquished their lead and finally clinched the match on
James Haag's kill.
"We started slowly, but in the last three games we played at the level we've performed at the past few weeks and were able to beat a game Hunter team," said Head Coach
Jose Pina.
Haag and Li each totaled a team-high 12 kills, with
Tyler Flood finishing right behind with 11.
Matin Bikdeli provided 41 assists for the Violets, as well as four blocks and eight digs. Haag and
Evan Lindley each had a team-high nine digs.
"
Matin Bikdeli had a very strong match and our middles were dominant once again," Pina added.
The Violets return to the court on Friday, March 15, when they host #9 SUNY New Paltz at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility. First serve is slated for 6pm.
