The New York University women's basketball team was defeated by Emory University 78-70 in a University Athletic Association (UAA) game on Super Bowl Sunday, February 3, at the Sportsplex in Manhattan.
Emory (15-5, 6-3) led the entire first quarter, going up by as many as 11 points. Midway through the second quarter, the Eagles increased their lead to a game-high 21 points, 36-15.
However, they were held scoreless over the final 5:07 of the first half as NYU (11-8, 3-6) closed the quarter on a 13-0 run and pulled with 36-28 at halftime.
Emory's Allison Chernow finally got the Eagles back in the scoring column with a three-pointer to open the second half. They then pushed the lead back up to 19 points, 54-35, before the Violets cut it to 54-41 after three quarters.
A 5-0 NYU spurt to open the fourth quarter again brought the Violets within eight.
However, the Eagles subsequently gained a pair of 14-point leads.
Janean Cuffee's three-pointer brought the Violets within nine, 68-59, with 3:31 remaining and as close as eight, 78-70, following a three-point play with 26 ticks left.
But, that was the end of the afternoon's scoring as the Eagles secured the victory.
Cuffee finished with a game-high 18 points and
Olivia Linebarger added 13.
Lauren Gast posted career highs of 17 minutes and 11 rebounds for NYU.
Lindsey Tse led five Emory players in double-digits with 15 points as the Eagles shot an efficient 51.9% (28-of-54) from the field.
The Violets return to action this Friday night, February 8, when they host Case Western Reserve University in another UAA contest. Tip-off at the Sportsplex is scheduled for 6:00pm.
