The New York University wrestling team competed at the New York State Championships at Oswego State University in Oswego, NY, on Sunday, November 24.
The NYU squad totaled 32 points and finished ninth in the 13-team competition.
Zach Alexander (North Andover, MA/St. John's Prep), who competed in the 141-pound bracket, received a first-round bye, recorded a major decision and a fall to reach the semifinals. After falling there, he moved to the consolation bracket and finished the day in fifth place.
Seth Schulman (Scarsdale, NY/Scarsdale) posted five victories at 141 and posted a sixth-place finish, while
Jacob Bernstein (Rockville, MD/Walter Johnson) also recorded a victory in that bracket..
At 174,
Maykel Dolorit (Miami, FL/Southwest Miami) won two bouts, one by technical fall and one by fall before losing in the quarterfinals.
Also at 174,
Kainalu Huddy (Kapolei, HI/Kamehameha Schools - Kapalama) recorded a quick fall (1:06) against his opponent before suffering a quarterfinal loss.
Justin Guzman (Clifton, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) recorded a sudden victory in the consolation bracket at 165.
In the 184-pound weight class,
Miguel Ruiz (Madera, CA/Madera) won four bouts, producing one fall in the process. He qualified for the third-place match but dropped a 1-0 decision to his opponent from Brockport State University.
Scott DuPont (Holmdel. NJ/Holmdel) also recorded a pair of victories and finished fifth in the 184-pound weight class.
"Today was a great day to get guys wrestling who regularly aren't in the limelight," said Head Coach
Bruce Haberli. "It was good to have four guys place in a prestigious event like the NY State Championships."
