NYU Finishes in Fourth Place

The New York University wrestling team competed on the second and final day of the Ithaca Invitational, hosted by Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY, on Saturday, November 2.

NYU finished fourth out of 14 team with 115 points. Johnson & Wales University won the tournament with a total of 147, while eighth-ranked Baldwin Wallace College (131.5) and 14th-ranked Ithaca (123.5) finished second and third, respectively. NYU finished ahead of 12th-ranked RIT, who totaled 65.5 points in a ninth-place effort.

Sean Lyons (Sewell, NJ/St. Joseph's Prep) led the way for NYU, placing second in the 157-pound bracket. He won three bouts by fall, one by technical fall, and one by decision en route to the championship round, where he fell to eighth-ranked Stanley Bleich of Baldwin Wallace. Liam Drury (Hinsdale, IL/Hinsdale Central) placed fifth in the same bracket.

Tyler Crew (St. Marys, GA/Camden County) put on a strong performance in the 125-pound bracket. After losing in the third round, he won six straight en route to a third-place finish.

Trent Furman (Washington Township, NJ/Westwood Regional) won six bouts (four falls, one technical fall) in the 133-pound consolation bracket before falling in the third-place match and taking fourth place. He also tallied the most pins in the least amount of time in the tournament (four pins, 4:05).

Cole Karam (Bath, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) had a good season debut, as he finished fourth in the 165-pound bracket.

Justin Leonard (Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) (174) and Will Ortman (Hopewell Valley, NJ/Hopewell Valley Central) (heavyweight) also had strong tournaments, finishing fifth and sixth, respectively, in their brackets.

"I'm proud of the way our guys wrestled today, especially our freshmen," said Senior Assistant Coach Corey Luce. "We have a very hard-working team, and we will be looking to get better each week."

NYU wrestling returns to action on Saturday, November 9, at the Ned McGinley Invitational hosted by King's College in Wilkes-Barre, PA.
