The New York University wrestling team competed in the final day of the Roger Williams Invitational, hosted by Roger Williams University, on Saturday, November 16, in Bristol, RI.

NYU finished the tournament in fourth place with 119.5 points. Johnson & Wales University won the 17-team tournament with 174 points, with Castleton University and The College of New Jersey taking second and third with 146 and 127.5 points, respectively.

Sean Lyons (Sewell, NJ/St. Joseph's Prep) and Evan Drill (Neshanic Station, NJ/Somerville) each won their respective brackets. Both wrestlers went 6-0 over the course of the two-day tournament. Drill won the 149-pound bracket with four falls and two decisions, while Lyons won the 157-pound bracket with two falls, two decisions, one technical fall, and one major decision in the semifinals. In the championship bout, Lyons was down 6-0 and was on his back for almost a minute, but came back to win 8-6 against Anthony Ulaszek of the Naval Academy Prep.

"Sean showed heart and grit out there coming back from a deficit and fighting his way back to a title," said Senior Assistant Coach Corey Luce.

Izaake Zuckerman (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde) placed second in the 174-bracket after falling in a competitive championship bout. He went 4-1 for the tournament with two falls and a decision.

Kade Loughney (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) finished third in the 165-pound bracket. After falling in the quarterfinals, he fought through the consolation bracket, winning the third-place bout by decision.

Trent Furman (Washington Township, NJ/Westwood Regional) placed fifth in the 133-pound bracket, going 4-2 for the tournament with three falls and a technical fall.

"I'm pleased with today's performance," added Luce. "We made some mistakes today, but we can correct them next week. What you can't teach is hard-nosed wrestling, and we saw a lot of that today."

NYU returns to action on Sunday, November 24, at the New York State Championships, hosted by Oswego State University in Oswego, NY.
