The New York University women's basketball team played its first road game of the 2019-20 season and defeated host Farmingdale State College 91-46 on Tuesday, November 12, in Farmingdale, NY.
The Violets (2-0) never trailed in the contest. The Rams (0-1) were playing their first game of the season.
"It's always great to come away with a mid-week win on the road," said Head Coach
Meg Barber. "While we have some work to do on the defensive side of the ball, overall our offense carried us tonight."
Brooklyn Shelton (Botetourt, VA/Lord Botetourt), who led the Violets with 21 points in NYU's season opener on Saturday, scored 16 points on Tuesday to share high-scoring honors with teammate
Janean Cuffee (New York, NY/The Lawrenceville School).
Annie Barrett (Cambridge, MA/Buckingham Browne & Nichols) paced NYU will seven assists.
"
Brooklyn Shelton (Botetourt, VA/Lord Botetourt) did a tremendous job in transition offense as well as
Annie Barrett (Cambridge, MA/Buckingham Browne & Nichols) finding the open shooters," Barber offered.
Lauren Koyama (Palo Alto, CA/Palo Alto), who contributed 12 points, opened the game with consecutive three-pointers and the Violets never relinquished the lead.
Alyssa Alvarez (Daly City, CA/Convent of the Sacred Heart) (11) also scored in double-digits, while
Jenny Walker (Sausalito, CA/Redwood) collected a team-high six rebounds.
The Violets' offense was humming all night, as they shot .563 (36-of-64) from the field, .519 (14-for-27) from three-point range and a perfect 1.000 (5-of-5) from the foul line.
"Recording 30 assists on 36 made shots points to our selflessness in finding our best shot and putting us in a great position taking open looks," Barber explained.
The Violets return to the court this weekend when they host the annual NYU Tip-Off Classic at the Sportsplex. The hosts will face Sarah Lawrence College at 5:00pm on Saturday, November 16, and Stevens Institute of Technology at 3:00pm on Sunday, November 17. .
