The New York University women's volleyball team played two matches at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Round Robin #2 on Saturday, October 13, at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA.
The Violets dropped their first match to Case Western Reserve University in four sets (25-17, 27-29, 25-14, 25-21) before falling to the University of Chicago in straight sets (25-19, 25-21, 25-11).
In its first match, NYU led 6-5 in the opening set before a 5-0 Spartan run gave them the lead for good. The Violets scored the first five points of the second set, but were eventually tied by Case Western 18-18. NYU then went up 24-21, but couldn't get the clinching point before Case Western forced overtime. Then, with the score tied 27-27,
Emily Kleck's kill and a Spartan attack error gave the Violets the set.
It seemed the momentum would continue in set three as NYU scored the first three points. However, Case Western immediately countered with the next six points and never gave up the lead. In the final set, neither team led by more than three points until the Spartans broke a 16-16 tie with a 4-0 run and went on to the clinching victory.
Gretchen Kincade led four Violets in double-digit kills with 14.
Nazzerine Waldon had 13, Kleck finished with 11 and
Abby Ausmus added 10.
Stella Alverson (27) and
Daryl Mitchell (19) each contributed a substantial amount of assists for the team. Five NYU players recorded double-digit digs, led by 23 from
Jacqueline Kupeli.
In the second match, NYU struggled from the opening serve. Chicago scored the first three points of the match and raced out to a 12-2 lead. The Maroons continued to control play, eventually taking the set 25-17.
The Violets played their best set in the second frame and led 17-13 before the Maroons went on an 8-2 run to take the lead en route to a 25-21 set win.
Chicago went ahead 10-2 in the third set and never looked back, ultimately taking the frame 25-11 and the match 3-0.
Maddie DeJong paced NYU with five kills against the Maroons.
The Violets are right back in action on Sunday for two more UAA matchups. The Violets face Washington University in St. Louis at 10am and Brandeis University at noon.
