The New York University wrestling team sent a contingent of wrestlers to the USC Wildcat Open, which was hosted by Johnson & Wales University on Sunday, January 28, in Providence, RI.
Sean Lyons (141 pounds) and
Raymond Jazikoff (157 pounds) highlighted the day for NYU as each took home championships in their weight classes.
Lyons won all four of his bouts with bonus-point victories as he won via technical fall in the round of 16, pinned his opponent in the quarterfinals and semifinals, and earned a win in the championship bout with an 8-0 major decision win. The sophomore improved to 10-0 on the season with his four victories on Sunday.
Jazikoff also went 4-0 en route to the championship, earning a pair of major decisions and a technical fall to work his way into the championship round. The senior captain took home the title with a 4-2 decision in the championship round and is now 37-4 this season. Jazikoff now has 138 career wins and needs just four more to pass Michael Oldham '01 for the most in program history.
Also placing for NYU were
Austin Day (133 pounds) and
Evan Drill (149 pounds), who each finished third in their respective weight classes.
The squad returns to action on Wednesday, January 31, when it crosses the Hudson River to take on Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ, at 7pm.
