The New York University wrestling team was defeated 25-20 by Johns Hopkins University at Madison Square Garden on Sunday, December 10, in Manhattan.
Johns Hopkins jumped out to a quick 16-0 lead through three bouts and NYU (4-3) picked up victories in the next four bouts to tie the score at 16-16. Hopkins recorded a win at 184 pounds and a forfeit victory at 197 to clinch the match before NYU tightened the final margin with a major decision win at heavyweight.
Matthew Coppola (149 pounds),
Raymond Jazikoff (157 pounds),
Owen Jones (165 pounds),
Blaise Benderoth (174 pounds) and
Santino Pelusi (heavyweight) were victorious for NYU.
Coppola earned a 10-6 victory to put NYU on the scoreboard and Jazikoff followed it up with a 10-2 major decision win.
Owen Jones bumped up a weight class for the second day in a row and won 9-6, before Benderoth recorded a second-period pin to tie the match with three bouts remaining.
Hopkins squeaked out a sudden victory win at 184 to go back in front and led by nine points after NYU forfeited at 197 pounds.
Pelusi then closed out the match with a 15-3 major decision victory at heavyweight.
NYU will be back in action on Friday, December 15, when it hosts Muhlenberg College and the United States Merchant Marine Academy at the New York Athletic Club.
