The New York University women's fencing team opened its 2017-18 dual-meet season with a 15-12 loss to Stevens Institute of Technology on Monday, November 13. NYU hosted the competition in the Rosenthal Pavilion at the Kimmel Center, which overlooks Washington Square Park in Manhattan's Greenwich Village.
The match was fiercely contested, with Stevens (7-1) nipping the Violets (0-1) by identical 5-4 scores in each of the three weapons.
Freshman
Tiffany Luong was a strong presence in foil, winning all three of her bouts by a combined score of 15-3. Sophomore
Rachel Yuen provided NYU's other victory in the weapon.
Leading the way in sabre was junior captain
Jacqueline Tubbs, who posted wins in all three of her bouts. Sophomore
Elizabeth Sweetra was responsible for the other sabre victory for NYU.
Senior captain
Stephanie Cunningham and fellow senior
Marissa Posner each recorded two of NYU's four epee victories.
"It was really tight throughout the match and we gave it a really good shot," said Head Coach
Steve Mormando. "We have a young team, but our upperclassmen came through and put us in a position to win. Great job by our freshman,
Tiffany Luong, as well."
The Violets return to the strip on Sunday, December 3, when they will compete in the Sacred Heat Duals in Fairfield, CT.
