New York University's fencer wrapped up the women's side of competition at the NCAA Championships, hosted by the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN, on Friday, March 20.
The women's team representative, Katherine Chen, finished her second day of competition with 11 wins in 23 bouts overall.
On Thursday, March 19, she placed 16th among 24 fencers in women's epee through the first three rounds with a 7–8 record.
On Friday, Chen finished the day with a 4–4 record and finished 14th in her weapon.
Chen's performance earned all 11 of the team's points, placing NYU 18th overall out of 26 schools in the women's team standings.
"Katherine showed a lot of resolve today and really fought her way through a tough field," said Head Coach Ben Bratton. "She was just a few touches away from All-American honors, which says a lot about how she competed. Of course we would've liked a little more, but this is the kind of experience that's going to pay off for her down the road."
"Notably, Katherine is the first women's epeeist to compete in this event since 2005," Bratton added. "It is possibly the best result in the weapon since then as well."
The event concludes NYU's women's performance, and the men will begin their championship run tomorrow. Under the NCAA's new scoring format for 2026, the men's and women's team titles are now separate standalone trophies.
"I'm excited to see the guys tomorrow. I know they're fired up after watching today, and it should be another really competitive day," Bratton concluded.
The Violets will be represented in South Bend by Szymon Wojciechowski in epee and Jerry Pan in saber as they compete for individual honors and points toward the inaugural standalone men's team trophy.
