The New York University wrestling team competed on the second day at the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Multi-Divisional National Duals on Friday, January 6, at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, IN.

NYU, ranked #13 in the most recent NWCA poll, fell to Ferrum College 27-13 in its only match of the day. The grapplers' overall record now stands at 10-3.

"We're disappointed with the team result, but still happy with some individual results," said Assistant Coach Gene Kobilansky. "There are plenty of good learning opportunities to take from today and I think we are still in the right place to move forward."

Sean Lyons won for NYU at 141 pounds to continue his successful freshman campaign. The rookie shut out his opponent, earning an 11-0 major decision victory to improve to 15-4 on the season.

After a loss at 157 pounds, NYU earned three straight wins from Sam Schwartzapfel (165 pounds), John Messinger (174 pounds) and Kevin Ford (184 pounds). Those victories closed the deficit to 21-13, but that would be as close as it would get as Ferrum won the final two bouts of the match to make the final score 27-13.

The squad returns to action next Saturday, January 14, when it travels to Plymouth, NH, for the Jim Aguiar Invitational, hosted by Plymouth St. University. 

"We're looking forward to getting healthy and being able to put our top lineup out soon," added Head Coach Bruce Haberli.
