A contingent of grapplers from the New York University wrestling team traveled north to Providence, RI, to compete in the USC Wildcat Open, which was hosted by Johnson & Wales University on Sunday, January 29.
There was no team scoring at the event.
Four of NYU's nine participants reached the final at their respective weight classes with
Nick Matthews (149 pounds) and
Raymond Jazikoff (157 pounds) recording first-place finishes.
Evan Drill (149 pounds), who lost to his teammate Matthews in the final, and
Anthony Calvano (125 pounds) both took home second-place honors. Calvano fell in the final to the seventh-ranked 125-pounder in the country, Bobby Jordan of Johnson & Wales.
Matthews produced four wins to claim the title, inlcuding one fall, before defeating Drill 1-0 in the final.

Bruce Haberli. "He's put in four years for us to get where he is and I couldn't be happier."

Ian Burke 11-7 in the semifinals before falling to Matthews.
Jazikoff posted four victories en route to his championship, including a 3-0 decision over Jackson Mordente of NCAA Division I Long Island University in the final.
"It's good to see Ray back after his injury and seeing him dip a little bit," Haberli explained. "He looked more like himself today and had a really good tournament."
Calvano recorded two victories before falling to Bobby Jordan of host Johnson & Wales in the final.
"Overall, the guys wrestled really well," Haberli concluded. "The competition was good and we produced a lot of wins out there."
The squad returns to action on Saturday, February 4, when it takes part in a quad-meet hosted by Bridgewater State University, in Bridgewater, MA. NYU will take on the host Bears, as well as Worcester Polytechnic Institute and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, beinning at 12:00 pm.
