Messinger Records 100th Career Win as NYU Finishes in Second

Senior Captain is Fifth in Program History to Reach Milestone

RESULTS

The New York University wrestling team competed at the Jim Aguiar Invitiational on Saturday, January 14. The event was hosted by Plymouth State University, in Plymouth, NH.

NYU collected 133.5 points to finish in second place at the 10-team event. The University of Southern Maine nipped NYU by one-half point for the team title, finishing with 134 points. Castleton University finished in third place, scoring 111.5 points.

The highlight of the day came early as senior captain John Messinger recorded a pin in his opening bout. Messinger's victory was the 100th of his career, becoming just the fifth wrestler in program history to reach the milestone.

"It was great to see John reach the 100-win milestone today," said Senior Assistant Coach Corey Luce. "He has worked so hard during his time at NYU and is deserving of it all."

Messinger dominated his way through the 174-pound bracket, finishing 4-0 with three wins by fall and one by major decision to take the title. The Putnam Valley, NY, native is now 24-2 this season and 24-0 against Division III wrestlers.

Senior captain Matthew Coppola (149 pounds) and sophomore Ian Burke (157 pounds) both reached the finals in their respective weight classes. Each recorded a 3-1 record on Saturday.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS:

- Junior Anthony Calvano was 3-1 on the day and finished in third place at 133 pounds.

- Freshmen Will Crisco and Sean Lyons wrestled for third place at 141 pounds. Lyons beat his teammate 6-3 to finish among the top three in the weight class.

- Senior captain Nick Matthews finished in third place at 149 pounds.

- The NYU wrestlers combined to win 14 bouts by fall, six more than any other team at the event.

The grapplers will be back in action on Saturday, January 21, when they take on the University of Scranton and The College of New Jersey in a pair of dual meets at the College of Mount Saint Vincent in Riverdale, NY.
