RESULTS

The New York University wrestling team competed at the New York State Intercollegiate Championships on Sunday, November 11, at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY.

NYU, ranked #16 in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) poll, finished ninth out of 27 teams. Division I host Cornell won the competition, while the University of Buffalo and Columbia University rounded out the top three.

The squad finished third among Division III schools, only trailing #3 Ithaca College and #8 SUNY Cortland, which finished three points ahead of NYU.

"This is the toughest tournament we wrestle in every season," said NYU Senior Assistant Head Coach Corey Luce. "Our guys came out to compete and wrestled hard all day."

Junior captain Raymond Jazikoff was NYU's top finisher. The South Plainfield, NJ, native won five bouts on the day and finished in fourth place in the 157-pound bracket. His only two losses came against a pair of Division I opponents from Army West Point.

"Ray is one of the toughest wrestlers we've every coached and tries to out-work everyone in the wrestling room," added Luce. "His goal is to win a national title, and today he showed he is capable of it."

NYU also had a pair of freshmen grapplers, Evan Drill and Sean Lyons, place at 141 pounds. Drill came in fifth and Lyons finished seventh. 

"Evan and Sean both wrestled great today," concluded Luce. "Evan continues to improve each week and showed us today he can hang with the nation's best, while Sean proved he is never out of a match and can put big points on the scoreboard when he needs to."

The Grapplers return to action on Sunday, November 27, when they compete in the Grapple at the Garden at Madison Square Garden. The squad will take on Johns Hopkins University at 8:30am and Muhlenberg College at 10:30am.
