Men's Volleyball Falls Short in Five-Setter

Violets Erase a Two-Set Deficit, But Drop Fifth

Connor Mortland connected with Colin LaPorte for a kill 21 times in the match.

Box Score

The New York University men's volleyball team (14-10) lost to inter-city rival Baruch College (21-9) in five highly contested sets on Thursday, March 28, at the Athletic Recreation Complex in Manhattan. The final score was 25-20, 26-24, 19-25, 17-25, 15-12.

Baruch controlled the entire first set by jumping out to a quick lead and never looking back. The lead grew as large as seven before the set concluded at 25-20.

The second set contained a completely different narrative. After the Bearcats ran out to a 9-1 lead, it was a Chase Klein kill that sparked an eight-point run for the Violets which tied the game at nine. The set remained tight as a Colin LaPorte kill knotted the score at 24. Consecutive Violet errors caused them to drop the set 26-24.

NYU finally broke through in the third set. A Klein kill and three straight Bearcat errors gave the squad an early 4-0 lead. They never stumbled en route to a 25-19 victory.

The momentum carried into the fourth. A Connor Mortland kill broke a 3-3 tie, and an assisted block off a Jack McKee attack by Nick Capriccio and Jacob Getz ended the set at 25-17.

The final set saw a tie score at every point between one and nine before Baruch took the first two-point advantage of the set at 11-9. Eventually, it was a Steven Coniglio kill that ended the set at 15-12 and gave Baruch the 3-2 victory.

- Mortland recorded a match-high 40 assists to go along with nine digs, four service aces, three kills, one solo block, and three block assists.
