Chicago 73 NYU 57
The New York University women's basketball team suffered its first home loss of the season on Friday night, February 14, falling 73-57 to the University of Chicago at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.
Playing without two of their starters (
Megan Dawe,
Riley Wurtz), the Violets (18-3, 7-3 University Athletic Association) were on the wrong end of an excellent three-point shooting performance by the Maroons (13-8, 7-3), who shot 13-of-29 (44.8 percent) from beyond the arc.
Other than Chicago's three-point success, the contest was virtually even. NYU was outrebounded slightly, 35-31, but controlled the points in the point, outscoring the Maroons 30-24 down low. In addition, both teams were identical on second-chance points (7-7) and fast-break points (4-4). Lastly, each team had a little trouble with ball control. NYU turned it over 21 times while Chicago gave it away 20 times.
"We played really hard, and defensively we played real good competitive defense for about 32 minutes," said NYU Head Coach
Lauren Hall-Gregory. "Chicago is a really good team, and if you give them eight minutes of really good looks they're going to be able to put points up on the board."
With the NYU loss, the teams have split the season series and now each hold a share of second place in the Association.
