New York University's women's basketball team improved to 10-0 with a 69-58 victory over a tough Cabrini College squad on Saturday afternoon, January 4, in the NYU Holiday Classic at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

It was an overall team effort for the Violets, who had seven players score at least eight points.

"We've continued to show as a team that on different nights different people step up," said Head Coach Lauren Hall-Gregory. "We can consistently count on seven to eight people offensively to contribute."

Leading NYU with a team-high 13 points was All-Classic honoree freshman guard Kaitlyn Read. She was joined by fellow guard, sophomore Riley Wurtz (12 points, three rebounds and three assists), and senior forward Alexis Doherty, who had her best showing of the year with season-bests in points (9) and rebounds (9).

The game was tightly contested throughout, with the Violets holding a slight edge in rebounds, 43-41. NYU won the game by getting to the free throw line, attempting 37 free throws to the Cavaliers' 16. In addition, the Violets shot 64.9 percent from the charity stripe, while Cabrini (8-3) shot 56.3 percent.

"It wasn't a particularly pretty game; lots of missed shots," said Hall-Gregory. "But, we were able to win it with grit and toughness. It was a real confidence booster."

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Sophomore co-captain guard Maya Wasowicz scored nine points while pulling down four boards, dishing out two assists, and notching four steals.

- Sophomore co-captain forward Megan Dawe, freshman guard Amy Harioka and freshman forward Lindsey Oldshue scored eight points apiece. Dawe also pulled down nine boards and notched three steals, while Oldshue added three blocks and three boards. Harioka added four rebounds, as well.

"We went on a run at the beginning of the second half that gave us offensive confidence and then we weathered their run," said Hall-Gregory. "We stayed composed down the stretch."

- The Cavaliers' Brittany Sandone scored 12 points on Saturday after dropping 22 in Friday's game against Juniata College and also made the All-Classic Team. Kate McDonald of Juniata, who registered a double-double (16 points and 19 rebounds) in the Juniata's win over Oswego State University on Saturday afternoon was also selected to the All-Classic Team.

The Violets will be back in action on Tuesday night, January 7, when they travel uptown to Hunter College. Tip-off against the Hawks is scheduled for 5:00 pm.
