Women's Basketball Falls 71-68 at Carnegie

Violets Now 4-2 in UAA Play

The #20 New York University women's basketball suffered a heartbreaking loss on the road at Carnegie Mellon University, falling 71-68 in Pittsburgh, PA, on Friday night, January 31.

The Violets (15-2, 4-2 University Athletic Association) had a chance to tie the game in the final possesion, but two three-point attempts came up short as the Tartans (11-6, 2-4 UAA) came away with the victory.

NYU began the second half on a 20-2 run and took a game-high 17-point lead. Carnegie Mellon then called a timeout and followed with a 15-0 run of its own to bring the game to within two points.

Following the Tartans' run, the lead changed sides five times, with Carnegie Mellon taking its final lead with just 25 seconds remaining in the contest.

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Each team was able to capitalize on the other's mistakes, tying 28-28 in points off turnovers.

- The Violets worked the offensive boards, outscoring the Tartans 19-12 on second-chance points.

- Freshman guard Kaitlyn Read led NYU with 18 points. Sophomore co-captain Megan Dawe was right behind her with 15 before fouling out with just 12 seconds left.

- Freshman forward Lindsey Oldshue pulled down a team-high nine rebounds along with seven points. Fellow forward senior Alexis Doherty registered seven rebounds and five points.

- Junior co-captain point guard Melissa Peng (nine points, four assits), freshman guard Jessie Fifield (five points, four rebounds) and sophomore co-captain guard Maya Wasowicz (six points) contributed, as well.

- Liza Otto led the attack for Carnegie Mellon, registering 19 points and 10 rebounds.

The Violets will be back in action on Sunday afternoon, February 2, when they travel to Cleveland, OH, to face Case Western Reserve University.
