Washington 70 NYU 60
The New York University women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season on Sunday afternoon, January 19, in St. Louis, falling 70-60 on the road at #2 Washington University-St. Louis.
The Violets (13-1, 2-1 University Athletic Association) battled foul trouble throughout the contest, while the Bears (13-1, 3-0 UAA) were able to take advantage at the free-throw line.
Early in the game, the Violets jumped all over Washington to take a seven-point lead with 15:26 remaining in the half. Unfortunately, that was when the foul trouble began for NYU. At the end of the first half, the Violets trailed 38-24 and had four players with two fouls, three of whom were forwards.
The Violets would come back in the second half, Despite trailing by 17 at one point, NYU was able to trim the lead down to nine points on two seperate occasions, but were unable to overcome the deficit.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Sophomore co-captain forward
Megan Dawe scored a team-high 20 points with six rebounds despite playing just 20 minutes due to foul trouble.
- Senior forward
Alexis Doherty scored a season-high 12 points, while pulling down six boards in a career-high 33 minutes.
- Sophomore guard
Riley Wurtz chipped in eight points, while junior co-captain point guard
Melissa Peng notched six points.
- Melissa Gilkey led the charge for the Bears, scoring 33 points with 14 rebounds.
"I thought it was a great team effort overall and I'm really proud of how we competed," said Head Coach
Lauren Hall-Gregory. "I think it would've been a different game if we hit our free throws and limited their second-chance points. We're definitely looking forward to the opportunity to play them on our home floor."
The Violets will be back in action next weekend when they host Emory University and the University of Rochester at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan. NYU is scheduled to tip-off with the Eagles at 6:00 pm on Friday night, January 24. The match-up with the Yellowjackets is scheduled for a 2:00 pm tip following the men's game versus Rochester.
