Box Score

The New York University women's basketball team could not climb back from a big deficit in falling 89-74 at Case Western Reserve University on Friday, February 8, in University Athletic Association (UAA) play in Cleveland, OH.

Led by Nicole Lem's career-high 25 points, the Violets (8-13, 1-9) tried to claw back from a 23-point deficit in the second half. NYU got as close as 11 in the final minutes but could not get the stops it needed on the defensive end.

Highlights

- After turning it over 17 times in the first period and trailing 43-27 at halftime, the Violets played one of their best halves of the season in the second. NYU had 47 second-half points, its second-highest output in a period this season, while shooting 52.9% (18-34) from the floor and turning it over just four times.

- With the Violets down 70-51 with 10:10 left, Lem scored nine points over the next five minutes to pull NYU to within 12 at 74-62.

- The Violets' offense kept clicking the rest of the way, but the Spartans (14-7, 6-4) had a response nearly every time down the floor to squash any threat of a late comeback.

- Lem had 16 of her career-best 25 points in the second half. She finished 9-14 from the field and 5-6 from the line and added five rebounds and four assists.

- Alexis Doherty netted a season-high 10 points off the bench, while Megan Dawe recorded nine points and seven rebounds. Melissa Peng doled out a career-high 10 assists, notching just the eighth double-digit assist game in school history.

- Evy Iacono led Case with 23 points and five assists. Erica Iafelice (17 points), Marissa Miles (16 points) and Brooke Orcutt (12 points) also scored in double figures for a Spartan squad that shot a scorching 65.4% (17-26) in the second half.

“Offensively, we made the adjustments we needed to make in the second half – we were more efficient and more patient,” said Head Coach Lauren Hall-Gregory. “On the defensive side, we need to finish out possessions, rebound and track down deflections.

“In the end, we didn't give up, but we need to learn to sustain intensity for 40 minutes,” she added.

NYU returns to action on Sunday, February 10, when it travels to Pittsburgh, PA, to take on Carnegie Mellon University. Game time is at 2:00 pm.
