Luciano's Goal Gives NYU Another Big Victory

Kardassis' free kick into the box set up the game-winning goal.
Box Score

The New York University men's soccer team notched its second straight win over a nationally ranked team, beating #18 Stevens Institute of Technology 1-0 on Saturday, September 8, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.

Paolo Luciano scored the winner for the Violets (4-0) in the 59th minute on a perfectly executed set piece, lifting NYU past the 18th-ranked Ducks (2-2) for the first time since 2002. The victory came three days after the Violets defeated #22 William Paterson University 2-1.

Highlights

- Luciano broke through for the game winner 13:17 into the second half. Tino Kardassis played a long free kick into the box, which Kyle Green headed across to Luciano. The senior then buried it with one touch into the corner.

- The goal came with NYU producing numerous scoring chances. The Violets outshot Stevens 19-7 for the game and 12-4 in the second half. Luciano, Green and Nimo Freitag Bergstroem combined for 15 of the team's 19 attempts.

- The Ducks' best chance came just 1:37 into the second half, when Zach Adler bent a free kick on frame. But Jonas Poster dove and made the stop, one of his three saves en route to earning the shutout.

- The win snapped a seven-game winless streak against Stevens for NYU, a stretch dating back to 2003 (the Violets advanced past the Ducks on penalty kicks in the 2006 NCAA Tournament, but the game technically counts as a tie). It also upped the Violets' record against nationally ranked teams to an impressive 4-3-5 (.542) over the last three seasons.

- NYU is 4-0 for the first time since 1994 – when current Head Coach Joe Behan was a player on the team.

“It was a very good team performance,” said Behan of the defeat of Stevens. “The midfield battled non-stop and the back line did very well. Niki Chow really cleaned up the midfield against a dangerous Stevens team.”

The Violets return to action on Wednesday, September 12, for a road contest against the City College of New York. The game will be played on the campus of Purchase College at 2:30 pm.
