A game-tying goal in the final minutes and a penalty-kick goal with 1:01 left gave the New York University men's soccer team a thrilling 2-1 victory over #22 William Paterson University on Wednesday, September 5, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.

Chris Ramirez netted the tying goal with 9:08 to play, and Niki Chow buried the game-winning PK with 61 seconds left to give the Violets (3-0) a huge come-from-behind win over the nationally ranked Pioneers (1-1).

Highlights

- Ramirez's tying goal came on a beautifully executed corner. Mac Yumoto played the corner into the box, where Kyle Green flicked it in front. Ramirez then back-tapped it off his heel and in.

- Chow's penalty kick was awarded after Paolo Luciano was brought down by the goalkeeper at the edge of the box. Nimo Freitag Bergstroem played a through ball to Luciano, who only had the keeper left to beat.

- Chow, a senior captain, calmly buried the winning penalty, his second such goal of the young season. Ramirez's goal was his third of the year in as many games.

- William Paterson took the lead in the 73rd minute, when Matt Nigro played a touch to Marcus Hackett, who volleyed a shot to the far corner.

- The thrilling contest evened the series between the teams at 3-3-1. Last year's contest unfolded nearly exactly the same way, only in the Pioneers' favor.

“Coming back from a goal down showed character and fight,” said Violet Head Coach Joe Behan. “It was a very good, up-and-down game that could've gone either way. But we performed very well and didn't drop our heads when we went down.”

NYU returns to action on Saturday, September 8, for a second straight contest against a nationally ranked side. The Violets will face #18 Stevens Institute of Technology at Gaelic Park at 12:00 pm.
