The New York University men's and women's soccer teams open University Athletic Association (UAA) play this weekend at Case Western Reserve University.
Both Violet squads will battle the Spartans on Saturday, September 29, in Cleveland, OH. The women kick off the doubleheader at 5:00 pm, followed by the men taking on the defending UAA co-champions at 7:30 pm.
The NYU men, ranked #6 in Division III entering the contest, begin UAA action with a perfect 8-0 record, the best start in school history. Two seasons ago, the Violets began their run to the UAA title in Cleveland, beating Case 2-0 on goals from
Kyle Green and
Paolo Luciano. That squad would go on to finish 4-0-3 in UAA action – without allowing a single goal in Association play – en route to the first UAA Championship in school history.
Green and Luciano still lead the NYU offense, with Green first on the team in goals (6) and points (15) and Luciano second in each category (3 goals, 8 points). Defensively, the Violets have allowed just two goals all season and have recorded five straight shutouts. NYU's streak of consecutive shutout minutes sits at 467:42 entering the UAA opener.
The Violet women are also on a tremendous early run, as the squad has won four straight contests and enters its first UAA contest with a 6-2 mark. NYU is averaging more than four goals per game, led by the trio of
Melissa Menta (20 points),
Cami Crawford (17 points) and all-time leading scorer
Serra Tumay (14).
The Violets will be looking to snap a string of three straight 1-0 losses to the Spartans in one of the closest series imaginable. NYU and Case are 8-8-1 against each other, with 11 of those 16 contests being decided by one goal and five having gone to overtime. Each of the last four meetings has been a one-goal game.
