Women's Volleyball Sweeps Pair at Classic

The New York University women's volleyball team swept both its matches on the second day of competition at the NYU Violet Classic, which was held at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan on Friday and Saturday, September 21-22.

The Violets (10-5) breezed past North Park University 25-8, 25-21, 25-10 (4-9), then continued their dominance with a 25-19, 25-20, 25-16 win over Frostburg State University (1-16).

NYU and Haverford College both finished a perfect 3-0 at the Classic, but the Violets were awarded first place due to a better overall point differential (+85-+58).

The Violets' Alexandria Mao was voted the Classic's Most Valuable Player. The All-Tournament honorees were Kass Greis (Frostburg State), Emily Carson (Susquehanna),
Nina Mutty (Haverford), Meg O'Day (Haverford), Nicole Frias (NYU), Kaylee Schanda (NYU)

Highlights vs. North Park

- NYU hit .326 while the Viking hit only .011 (22 kills, 21 errors)

- Frias had an all-around strong performance with seven kills, five block assists and  a match-best .455 hitting percentage.

- Mao had a team-high 10 kills while hitting .444.  
  
- Two Violets (Mackenzie Calle -17; Hope Bogle - 10) had double-digit assists.

- Schanda led NYU with 11 digs.

"Our offense played consistently and aggressively," said NYU Head Coach Jolie Ward. "This was one of our best blocking matches of the year, which allowed our defense to control the tempo of the game."  

Highlights vs. Frostburg State

- Mao hit .355 and recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 12 digs.

- Bogle also notched a double-double with match highs of 28 assists and 14 digs.

- Jenn Korte and Frias each had 10 kills.

- Allie Williams hit a team-high .571 with nine kills in just 14 attempts. 

- 14 Violets saw playing time in the match.

“Once we stabilized our serve-receive game, it opened up many different options for us offensively,” Ward said. “That, combined with the leadership from Hope, Alex and Kaylee, was the recipe for success today.”
