Box Score

The New York University men's soccer team completed an unbeaten opening weekend with a 2-0 victory over Brooklyn College on Sunday, September 2, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.

Chris Ramirez and Mac Yumoto scored the goals for the Violets (2-0), who outshot the Bulldogs (0-1) 20-5 and earned their first shutout in 10 games dating back to last season.

Highlights

- Ramirez gave NYU the early lead in the 22nd minute. Danny Weisbaum played a ball into the box that found Ian Cassell, who struck a hard cross in front of the net. Ramirez got a touch on the ball, redirecting it into the back of the net.

- Yumoto netted the insurance goal with a beautiful strike. KC Eboh played a cross into Yumoto just inside box, and the sophomore blasted a left-footed shot past the keeper and in.

- The Violets had several other outstanding opportunities. Paolo Luciano had several of those attempts, including a header that traveled just over the crossbar and a hard shot that goalkeeper Stamatis Boundouris got just enough of to keep out.

- In combining for the shutout, the Violets' defense was particularly strong in the second half, holding the Bulldogs to just one shot.

- NYU was able to give valuable experience to its young players, among them freshmen Todd Irving, Jr. and Lucas Vazquez, who each saw their first collegiate action.

“Mac struck his goal very well and gave us the cushion that we needed because they were dangerous on the break,” said Violet Head Coach Joe Behan. “I thought we did a much better job defensively in the second half. And the bench did very well tonight, they were a huge help.”

NYU returns to action on Wednesday, September 5, when it hosts William Paterson University at Gaelic Park at 7:00 pm.
