Box Score

The New York University men's soccer team opened the 2012 season with a decisive victory, defeating the Polytechnic Institute of NYU 3-1 on Friday, August 31, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.

Niki Chow, Chris Ramirez and Ryan Heine were the goal scorers for the Violets (1-0), who won their season opener for the first time since 2007.

Highlights
- Chow put NYU on the board just before halftime, converting a penalty kick after Heine was taken down in the box.

- Ramirez made it 2-0 in the 56th minute on a great set piece. Mac Yumoto played a free kick into the box, where Tino Kardassis played it to Ramirez, who headed it in off the underside of the crossbar.

- Andres Torres cut the Fighting Blue Jays' (0-1) deficit in half just five minutes later, scoring on a scramble in the box following a free kick.

- Heine put the lead back at two in the 68th minute on a beautiful strike. Mickey Ingerman found Heine in the middle of the field, and the sophomore placed a shot from 25 yards out just under the crossbar.

- NYU-Poly had a chance to make it 3-2 just minutes later after being awarded a penalty kick. However, Matthew Burke's penalty traveled wide, leaving NYU's lead at 3-1.

- For the game, the Violets outshot the Fighting Blue Jays 13-5.

“We looked good in spells, but the players know that they still have a lot of work to do,” said NYU Head Coach Joe Behan. “It was a tough game and Poly came in and played well, but we'll take the win to start the year.”

The Violets return to the pitch on Sunday, September 2, for an 8:00 pm contest against Brooklyn College at Gaelic Park.
