The New York University men's tennis team defeated visiting Wilkes University 8-1 on Sunday, April 15, at the Stadium Tennis Center at Mill Pond in the Bronx.
With the win, the Violets improve to 6-5 for the season, as they have recorded victories in three of their last four contests.
"I'm happy with the way we came out right from the start," said NYU head coach
Horace Choy.
NYU took a 3-0 lead by sweeping the doubles slate against Wilkes.
Connor Witty and
Steven Wu won 8-2 at #1,
Ting Yee Lai and
William Smithline prevailed 8-6 at #2, and
CJ Leong and
Bowen Xu cruised 8-3 in the third slot.
In singles action, Witty won 6-4, 6-4 at #1, while
Steven Wu posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory at second singles. At #3,
Leong notched a 6-2, 6-3 win, while
Tim Wu dominated for a 6-2, 6-2 victory at #4. At #5, Lai lost a heartbreaker, falling 7-6(2), 1-6, 10-8, but Smithline took his #6 singles match 6-0, 6-2.
"Sweeping doubles was key. It made the guys a little bit more relaxed heading into singles, where we played well up and down the lineup," Choy said.
The Violets are back in action at home on Wednesday, April 18, when they take on Manhattanville College.
