Men's Tennis Begins UAA Championship Play

#7 Violets Fall to #2 Carnegie Mellon

The New York University men's tennis team began play at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on Thursday, April 23, at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, FL.

The Violets entered as the #7 seed in the eight-team tournament, while the Tartans came in as #2.

Thursday's match begin with doubles competition, and Carnegie Mellon secured the point by winning two of the three contests. The third went unfinished.

Niklas von Hellns and Bryan Hui fell short in a close 6-4 decision at No. 1, while Shido Ito and Jeh-Lei Fan dropped a 6-1 decision at No. 2

In singles, the Tartans captured straight-set victories at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 to clinch the match. Tight matches at No. 1, No. 5 and No. 6 went unfinished as Carnegie Mellon posted the 4-0 team win.

Fan at No. 5 was battling in the third set when his match was stopped, while Cooper Kline at No. 6 was tied in the second set before it went incomplete.

"We battled from start to finish," said Head Coach Horace Choy. "Carnegie Mellon is a very good team. We got into some early holes and couldn't fInd our way out of them. It was a learning experience for some of our younger players to see the level of play in the UAA.'

NYU moves on to play #6 Brandeis University on Friday beginning at 12:30pm.
