The New York University women's basketball team defeated the College of Staten Island 78-66 on Saturday, December 8, at the CSI Sports and Recreation Center in Staten Island, NY. The Violets held the lead for nearly the entire 40 minutes, as the last Dolphin lead came with 18:29 remaining in the first half.
The Violets (5-3) were propelled by a strong start, pouring in 42 first-half points on 17-31 (.548) shooting. NYU also owned a mammoth advantage on the boards, totaling 48 rebounds for the game. Their 21 offensive rebounds were equal to Staten Island's (3-4) combined total.
Highlights
- Cassidy Jourdan paced the Violets with 20 points on 8-18 shooting. Eighteen of those points came in the first half, as well as all four of her three-pointers. She also contributed six assists and two rebounds.
- Despite sitting most of the first half after picking up two early fouls, Riley Wurtz still managed to notch a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, with six of her boards coming on the offensive glass. She also contributed four assists without recording a turnover.
- Megan Dawe narrowly missed a double-double, netting 14 points and grabbing nine boards while chipping in with three assists.
- Melissa Peng also scored in double figures with 10 points, shooting 3-4 from behind the arc and tallying seven assists.
- NYU's 25 assists represented a season high. Their previous season best of 22 was achieved in a 78-52 victory over St. Elizabeth on November 29.
"I was really pleased with how we shared the ball and how that led to open shots," said Head Coach Lauren Hall-Gregory. "We preach unselfish basketball and the team is really buying into it.
"I'm also really impressed with how we continue to improve our rebounding as a team," Hall-Gregory continued. "All of that was on display today. It was a great team effort."
The win came in the last game of the first semester for the Violets. NYU returns to the floor with a home game at the Coles Sports Center vs. Skidmore College on Saturday, December 29. Tip-off is at 1:00 pm.
