SUNY New Paltz overcame a 13-point second-half deficit to beat the New York University women's basketball team 70-68 in the championship game of the NYU Tip-Off Tournament. The Violets hosted the tournament on Friday and Saturday, November 16-17, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

Freshmen Riley Wurtz and Megan Dawe were named to the All-Tournament Team for NYU (1-1). Wurtz had 15 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists to notch her second straight double-double to start her career, while Dawe recorded 13 points and eight boards.

Highlights

- NYU (1-1) led 63-50 with 7:28 to play, but the Hawks (2-0) slowly chipped away and eventually tied the game at 67-all with 1:22 left.

- Michelle Valle hit the go-ahead bucket for New Paltz with 32.3 seconds left, putting back an offensive board after a series of misses.

- Nicole Lem then drew a foul and went to the line with 21.2 seconds left. She made one of two free throws, pulling the Violets to within one.

- After both teams turned it over, Tournament MVP Alex McCullough went 1-2 from the line to put New Paltz back up two. Cassidy Jourdan's desperation three-point shot at the buzzer was then blocked by McCullough, giving the Hawks the Tip-Off title.

- Lem (11 points) and Peng (10 points) joined Wurtz and Dawe in double figures for NYU.

- The loss was the Violets' first-ever in the 11-year history of their annual Tip-Off Tournament. The squad had won the previous 10 titles and was 21-0 in the tournament entering the tilt against New Paltz.

“I think we showed that we can be a good team,” said Head Coach Lauren Hall-Gregory. “We're going to keep gaining experience as we play. We've got a lot of young players, and I think we really exceeded most people's expectations this weekend.”

NYU returns to action on Tuesday, November 20, when it hosts the Polytechnic Institute of NYU at Coles at 6:00 pm.
