The 19th-ranked New York University men's soccer team began a five-game season-ending home stand with a loss, falling 2-0 to visiting Kean University on Wednesday, October 17, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.
Playing without several regular starters, the Violets (10-3-1) could not find the back of the net despite holding a 14-7 advantage in shots. The Cougars (9-7), who have also defeated NYU's University Athletic Association (UAA) foe Emory University this season, scored early and then played defensively to earn the win.
Highlights
- Kean went up 1-0 in the 12th minute. Kharee Winslow ripped a free kick that hit off a defender in the Violets' wall, bounced off the turf and went in.
- NYU's best chance to tie came in the 22nd minute, when Nimo Freitag Bergstroem got free on the endline and played a corner into the box. KC Eboh headed a shot at goal, but it was stopped by goalkeeper Tyler Callahan.
- With the Cougars playing defensively in the second half, the Violets controlled possession but were only able to get two shots on frame.
- Kean made it 2-0 in the 81st minute on a counter with NYU pressing for the equalizer. Jose Arevalo played a pass ahead to Erickson Simeon, who one-touched it past the last Violet defender and headed straight at goal on a breakaway.
- For the game, NYU held a 14-7 edge in shots and a 5-1 advantage in corners.
“It's happened to us a few times this season where we've fallen behind,” said Head Coach
Joe Behan. “We certainly should have learned better for tonight, particularly from the last four games.”
The Violets return to Gaelic Park on Monday, October 22, for their regular-season non-conference finale. The squad hosts Richard Stockton College at 7:00 pm.
