#14 Men's Soccer Rallies for OT Win at Chicago, Back in First

McNitt-Gray Buries Game Winner for Huge Victory

McNitt-Gray's first career goal was a big one, winning the game and putting the Violets back in first place.
Box Score

Shawn McNitt-Gray's overtime goal completed a one-goal comeback and lifted the 14th-ranked New York University men's soccer team to a huge 2-1 road victory at the University of Chicago on Sunday, October 14, at Stagg Field in Chicago, IL.

After the second lightning delay of the game sent both teams to the locker room for 30 minutes at the end of regulation, McNitt-Gray ended the contest just 1:40 into the extra session. He took a short pass from Paolo Luciano just outside the box and blasted a left-footed shot inside the left post.

With the win, the Violets (10-2-1, 2-1-1) reclaimed a share of first place in the University Athletic Association (UAA). NYU, Brandeis University, Carnegie Mellon University, and Emory University all sit atop the table with seven points, with the University of Rochester and Washington University just a point behind with six.

Highlights

- The Maroons (7-3-3, 1-2-1) grabbed an early lead just 12:11 into the contest. Jorge Bilbao took advantage of the slick field conditions and bounced a free kick from 30 yards out into the upper right corner.

- The Violets had several outstanding chances to tie in the ensuing minutes, including shots from Kyle Green, Luciano and Ryan Heine that were all turned away by the keeper. With 16:31 left in the half, though, the first lightning delay was called and the field was cleared for 30 minutes.

- NYU eventually broke through to tie in the 58th minute. Tino Kardassis played a long free kick from near midfield into the box, which the keeper punched away. But, Niki Chow made a great play on the endline to keep it in and crossed it to Nimo Freitag Bergstroem in front, who buried a shot into the back of the net.

- After holding off for most of the match, the rain started coming down with about 10 minutes left in the second half. A second lightning strike in the area then caused a second delay between the end of the regulation and the start of overtime. But the Violets didn't need long to end the game after play restarted, with Luciano collecting a bouncing ball in the box and laying off a short pass to McNitt-Gray for a perfect strike.

- Jonas Poster made six saves in goal to earn the victory, while David Cohen and Brett Wiesen combined for six stops for Chicago.

“Comebacks on the road in the UAA are few and far between,” said Head Coach Joe Behan. “The team showed good character coming back like that. That was a great strike by Shawn, and Ryan Horch in particular was outstanding for us.”

NYU returns to action on Wednesday, October 17, for a non-conference matchup at 5:00 pm at Gaelic Park against Kean University. The contest is the first of five straight at home for the Violets to end the regular season.
