The New York University women's basketball team suffered its fifth straight University Athletic Association (UAA) setback on Friday, January 27, falling 65-48 to Carnegie Mellon University at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

With the win, the Tartans (7-10, 1-5) snapped a 23-game losing streak in UAA play. The victory was also their first at Coles since 1990-91, ending a 20-game winless stretch on the Violets' home court and a 17-game losing skid overall against NYU (9-8, 1-5).

Carnegie Mellon opened the game on a 10-2 run and controlled it from there, going up 25-9 on a pair of Emily Peel free throws. The Tartans' first half-lead swelled as high as 20 after an Alex Hansen three-pointer made it 34-14. Carnegie Mellon took a 38-19 lead into the locker room after Gabrielle West beat the buzzer with a running jumper.

For the half, NYU shot just 8-34 (23.5%) from the field and 2-14 (14.3%) from three-point range. The Tartans, meanwhile, were 14-28 (50.0%) from the floor.

The Violets shot better in the second half, going 13-30 (43.3%) while holding Carnegie Mellon to 33.3% (10-30) shooting. But the squad couldn't make a dent in the huge deficit, trailing by as much as 25 and getting no closer than 15.

Makenzie Hirz led NYU with 10 points and two blocks. Alexis Doherty contributed nine points off the bench, while Shelby Coon pulled down 13 rebounds.

Peel led all scorers with 18 points and added seven boards and five assists. West netted 15 points, while Jennifer Larsen had 12 points and eight rebounds. Jacquie Shaw was the Tartans' fourth double-digit scorer, recording a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards.

The Violets return to the court on Sunday for a UAA clash with Case Western Reserve University. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
