The New York University women's soccer team suffered its first defeat of the 2011 season, falling 1-0 to Ursinus College in the final game of the Stevens Engineering Cup on Sunday, September 11, on the campus of Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ.

Despite holding a 17-10 advantage in shots, the Violets (3-1) were defeated by the Bears (2-3) on a goal with just 14:06 to play in regulation.

“We had a lot of chances, we just couldn't finish.,” said NYU head coach Michele Canning.

In addition to being its first loss of the season, the defeat was especially bitter for NYU, as a Violet win would have given them their third Championship at the Stevens Engineering Cup in the last four years.

Instead, host Stevens captured the title by virtue of its 3-0 win over Ursinus on Saturday and a 1-1 draw with Ohio Northern University on Sunday.

Despite the defeat, NYU's Karli Masengale was named the Cup's Defensive Most Outstanding Player.

“She played really solid in the back for us,” commented Canning. “She was very consistent.”

Monica Oliveto scored the winning goal for Ursinus in the 74th minute on a scramble after a corner kick. Valerie Bedrock played a corner that the Violets' couldn't clear, and Oliveto slipped a shot pass NYU goalkeeper Jen Chuck.

Cami Crawford had the Violets' best chance of the contest in the 61st minute. As she did in NYU's 3-1 win over Ohio Northern on Saturday, she got free for a breakway, but this time she was unable to find the back of the net, as Kara DiJoseph came up with the save.

The Violets return to action on Friday when they host Vassar College at Gaelic Park. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
