Women's Soccer Falls In First Round of NCAA Tournament

Violets Drop Penalty Shootout to Wesleyan

The #21-ranked New York University women's soccer team battled through 110 minutes against Wesleyan University before falling 4-3 in penalty kicks in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday, November 15, in Medford, MA, at Tufts University.

" We fought," said Head Coach Scott Waddell, "We fought really, really hard and left it all over there. Super proud of the group."

After a scoreless first half the Violets earned a corner which turned into a 1-0 advantage. Sari Frankl sent a ball curling in from the corner flag which found the head of Elizabeth Argenziano who flicked it into the back of the net in the 49th minute.

The Violets defense was all over the field, putting pressure on the Cardinals. In the 68th, a tap-in from Wesleyan tied the game at 1-1.

As the clock wound down, NYU had multiple chances with the closest coming from Julia Spang in the 84th minute which the Cardinals' keeper managed to just get her fingers on.

Just a few minutes later, Maddy Tohanczyn made back-to-back massive saves to keep the Violets in the game and force overtime.

"In those moments, when she makes those big saves, it's not only for her, but it hypes up the whole team," said captain Hunter Hoelscher. "And those are the moments that give us the energy to play two overtimes and a full 90 minutes. It's those moments that keep us going."

In overtime, the Violets had three shots, two of which were on goal. But, the Cardinals' keeper kept them out.

Wesleyan had a wide open chance to take the advantage, but once again Tohanczyn was there to keep it even.

With penalty kicks on the line to seal the game, the Violets' Demetra Sideridis took the spot between the posts.

Hunter Hoelscher kicked off the shootout with a shot to the high left corner of the goal. Argenziano added her own to the high right and Frankl followed suit with a shot high left. Sideridis came up with a big save in the fourth round of the shootout, However, Wesleyan was able to take the advantage, going 4-3 in penalties.

NYU ends its season at 9-6-4.
