The New York University women's fencing squad won three of seven matches at the MIT Invitational on Sunday, February 6, in Cambridge, MA.

After today's Invitational, NYU holds a 2010-11 record of 10-12.

NYU faced seven excellent fencing programs. All but Boston College (BC) received votes in the most recent Women's USFCA Coaches Poll.  Besides BC, slate of teams in action on Sunday included #2 Penn State University, #8 University of Pennsylvania, Duke University, Brown University, Brandeis University, and the host school, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

The Violets lost to Duke in the opening round, winning only two of 27 bouts, but squeaked past MIT in round two, 14-13.  Against MIT, NYU's foil team went 7-2, while the Violets finished 5-4 in epee.

NYU fell to Brandeis in the third round, 15-12, and also dropped its fourth-round match, 25-2, against the vaunted Penn State squad.

In round five, Penn handled the Violets, knocking off NYU, 23-4.  But NYU bounced back in rounds six and seven, beating Brown 17-10 and BC 15-12.

Several Violet fencers displayed tremendous skill throughout the Invitational. In foil, captain Amanda Rysling finished 11-5, and Jess Sherman was 8-8.  Competing with the sabre team, Lisa Verzino parried to a bout record of 11-6.

Following the MIT Invitational, NYU will return home on Feb. 9 against traditional foes Columbia University, Sacred Heart University and Vassar College at the Coles Sports Center.
