Box Score

A deep three-pointer with 26 seconds to play sealed the game for Emory University as the New York University men's basketball team fell 93-85 on Sunday, February 6, at the Woodruff PE Center in Atlanta, GA.

The Eagles' (16-4, 7-2) Austin Claunch drained a triple from several feet beyond the three-point line to stop a tremendous Violet (12-8, 1-8) rally and put the game away. NYU had trailed by as many as 19 in the second half before cutting the deficit to three, 86-83, on a Carl Yaffe layup with 53 seconds on the clock. But on the ensuing possession Claunch hit the deep trifeca to put the Emory lead back at six, and the Violets couldn't convert on the other end. Claunch and Alex Greven then went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line to give the Eagles the win.

Kyle Stockmal, who poured in 18 of his season-high 20 points in the second half, got the NYU comeback started with the team trailing by 10 and under four minutes to play. Stockmal drained a three, made a steal on the defensive end and drew a foul on the fastbreak. The sophomore then sank both of his free throws to pull the Violets to within five, 82-77, with 3:13 left.

After a pair of Jake Davis free throws made it a seven-point game, Derek Becker drove and put in a layup to bring the deficit back down to five. Andy Stein then knocked the ball loose on defense and Becker hit both ends of a one-and-one to make it a one-possession game, 84-81, with 1:45 left.

With the Eagle lead back at five following a Greven jumper, D.J. Glavan's three-point attempt missed and Emory came down with the board. But Becker made a steal in the corner and Glavan fed Yaffe for a wide-open layup, making it a three-point game again, this time with 53 seconds to go. Claunch, however, squashed the rally by draining the long three after running the shot clock down.

The Eagles jumped out to a 21-10 lead in the first half, and their advantage hovered around 10 most of the way. NYU cut it to four, 36-32, late after five straight points from Becker, but Emory closed the period on a 13-2 run to enter halftime up 49-34.

The Eagle lead swelled to 19 with 9:25 left as the squad sank six three-pointers in the opening 10 minutes of the period. For the game, Emory made 13 triples and shot 46.4% from beyond the arc, helping it overcome the Violets' hot shooting, as NYU converted on 56.1% of its attempts from the floor (62.1% in the second half).

Stockmal and Stein both finished with 20 points, while Stockmal added a career-high seven assists (with just two turnovers). Becker netted a career-best 19 points to go along with four assists, while Glavan added 13 points.

Claunch recorded a double-double with 19 points and 12 assists. Jake Davis also scored 19 points, while Greven totaled 18. Alex Gulotta added 14 points for the Eagles.

The Violets return to action on Friday when they host Case Western Reserve University at Coles. Game time is scheduled for 8:00 pm.
