Women's Basketball Falls to #17 Rochester

Violets Can't Earn Season Sweep

Box Score

A week after defeating the University of Rochester, the New York University women's basketball team fell to the 17th-ranked Yellowjackets 64-46 on Friday, February 4, in Rochester, NY.

The Violets (10-9, 4-4) were held to a season-low 46 points – the same number they put up in the first half in beating Rochester (15-4, 5-3) 82-69 on January 28 – while shooting 26.6% (17-for-64) from the floor. The Yellowjackets, meanwhile, converted on 41.5% (22-for-53) of their attempts.

“After you beat a good team at home, you have to be ready to match their level of intensity when you flip it around and play them a week later when they're angry and it's a hostile environment,” said head coach Stefano Trompeo. “We didn't match their level of intensity and didn't execute offensively.”

NYU especially struggled to execute offensively over a nine-minute stretch in the first half. After a Maggie Ely three-pointer put them up 7-6 just 4:04 into the contest, the Violets were held scoreless for the next 9:07. Over that time, Rochester went on a 20-0 run to build a 27-7 advantage.

Ely finally ended the scoring drought with back-to-back jumpers, sparking a 10-2 run in which she also hit another trey. Immediately after Ely's triple, Chelsea Blake made a steal on the defensive end and went the distance for layup and-one. She sank the free throw to complete the three-point play, cutting the deficit to 12 at 29-17.

The Yellowjackets, however, scored the next six points and eventually went into halftime leading 35-19. Ely netted 12 of NYU's 19 points in the period.

The Violets got as close as 10 twice in the early stages of the second half, with the second time coming on a Bianca Storts trifecta. After that, though, Rochester went on a 13-3 run, capped by back-to-back threes from Kristyn Wright, to build a 20-point edge. From there, the Yellowjackets led by no fewer than 18 to earn the win and pull ahead of NYU in the University Athletic Association (UAA) standings.

Ely led the Violets with 16 points. Kelly Loughney added nine, while Shelby Coon pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.

Wright poured in a career-high 19 points for Rochester.  Jodie Luther narrowly missed a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds, while Madeline Korber scored 14 points.

NYU returns to the hardwood on Sunday when it takes on Emory University in Atlanta, GA. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
