The New York University women's basketball team dropped a 68-50 decision to Washington University on Friday, February 18, in St. Louis, MO.

The Violets (12-11, 6-6) led early in the contest as Chelsea Blake's layup and foul shot gave NYU a 12-11 lead with 13:16 remaining in the first half.

It turned out to be the Violets' final lead of the evening.

After the #9-ranked Bears (19-4, 10-2) recaptured the lead, Blake hit a jumper with 9:15 left to bring the Violets to within one, 15-14. However, the Bears countered with a 12-0 run and were never seriously threatened the rest of the way.

The Violets did manage to pull within seven, 27-20, on Cara Bonito's layup with 3:47 left in the opening period. NYU did not score again in the first half, however, as Washington closed out the session by scoring the final five points.

The Bears continued their dominance in the second half, scoring the first four points and never letting their lead sink below double digits. Washington opened a game-high 22-point advantage, 50-28, on Kristin Anda's foul shot with 12:15 left to play.

Maggie Ely tried to help the Violets mount a comeback in the second half, scoring 17 of her game-high 21 points in the final session. Her three-pointer with 3:30 left brought NYU to within 14, 59-45, with 3:30 remaining.

That was as close as the Violets got the rest of the way.

Chelsea Blake finished with 10 points and four assists for NYU. The Violets shot 34.4% (21-61) from the field and made only 2 of 17 (11.8%) three-pointers (both by Ely).

Kathryn Berger led Washington with 16 points and eight rebounds.

Alex Hoover (11 points) was the only other Bear with double-digit points.

The Violets continue their Midwest swing in Chicago on Sunday against the Maroons. Tip-off is set for 2:00 pm Central time.
