Blake's 106 assists so far this season rank fifth all-time at NYU.

Box Score

Chelsea Blake and Kelly Loughney both recorded double-doubles as the New York University women's basketball team beat Carnegie Mellon University 72-50 on Sunday, February 13, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

Blake scored 10 points and dished out a career-high-tying 10 assists for her second career double-double. The 10 assists gave her 106 for the season, moving her into fifth place on the NYU single-season list. With three regular-season games to play, the senior is just 20 assists shy of the school single-season record.

Four of Blake's 10 assists went to Loughney, who netted 10 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. Three other Violets (12-10, 6-5), Cara Bonito (game-high 15 points), Maggie Ely (11 points) and Alexis Doherty (10 points), scored in double figures as the team remained tied for fourth place in the University Athletic Association (UAA).

“We cleaned up the boards, which gives us great opportunities for our transition offense,” said head coach Trompeo, whose Violet squad outrebounded the Tartans (2-20, 0-11) 49-36. “We talked about playing as hard as we as can and fighting with a sense of urgency. We want to finish the season as strong as we can.”

NYU finished strong at the free-throw line against Carnegie Mellon. The Violets went 12-for-12 from the line, continuing their torrid pace at the charity stripe. They are shooting 80.5% from the line in UAA play, on pace to break the Association record.

Eight of those free-throw attempts came in the second half as NYU took the game over in the period. The Violets entered halftime leading 29-23, and the advantage dropped to four when Jacki Cortese hit a jumper for Carnegie Mellon early in the second period. After that, though, NYU went on an 8-0 run, building a 12-point edge with 13:13 left on an Ely layup.

Cortese and Emily Peel twice got the Tartans as close as 10 a few minutes later, but the Violets then scored 22 of the next 26 points, during which time Blake netted six points and doled out three assists, to put the game well out of reach. NYU's lead grew as high as 28 as the squad moved back over .500 in the UAA.

Blake added five steals to her 10-point, 10-assist effort. Doherty just missed being the third Violet to post a double-double by scoring 10 points and corralling eight rebounds, while Bianca Storts totaled eight points and a career-high-tying eight boards.

Cortese led Carnegie Mellon with 13 points. Peel finished with 12 points, five rebounds and a game-high five blocks, while Gina Tudi had six points, seven assists and three steals.

The Violets return to the hardwood on Friday when they travel to St. Louis to take on defending National Champion Washington University. Tip-off is at 6:00 pm central time.
