Grapplers Display Versatility in Victories

Galassi produced a clinching victory for NYU on Saturday.
Match Bout-by-Bout Results

A couple of switches in the regular lineup helped the New York University wrestling team defeat two of of its opponents in a quad meet held at Ursinus College in Collegeville, PA, on Saturday, February 12.

NYU defeated SUNY Oswego 24-16, lost to host Ursinus 31-14, then concluded the day with a 22-18 win over McDaniel College.

In that final match, Sabino Galassi, normally wrestling at 184, was needed at 197.  His 5-4 win in overtime clinched the victory for NYU over McDaniel.

"That was a huge win," said assistant coach Cory Luce.  "They had the advantage at heavyweight and we needed to win this one.  Sam was outstanding.  We bumped him up against one of their best wrestlers and he pulled it our for us."

Earlier in the day, Galassi wrestled at 184 and produced a major decision win in the team's victory over Oswego.

Another NYU grappler who was used in different weight classes was David Rice.  After going 2-0 in his normal 174-pound weight class, he pinned his McDaniel opponent at 184 in only 48 seconds.

Also going 3-0 for NYU on Saturday was All-American Matt Magill, who stayed within his regular 165-pound class.

"Matt was terrific today. He wrestled tough," Luce said. "He was never in danger of losing any of his matches."

Magill's victories came by technical fall, major decision and a 6-1 decision.

The day's results were a welcome relief for the team and coaching staff following NYU's crushing 39-6 loss at Franklin & Marshall College on Friday night.

"We sat everyone down Friday night, went over the fact that we didn't wrestle well and let them know that we needed everyone to step up," Luce said.  "We challenged them and they responded today."

Now 7-10 this season, the grapplers return to action next Saturday, Feb. 19, when they host a tri-meet with the University of Scranton and SUNY Morrisville at the Coles Sports Center.  Wrestling begins at noon for NYU's annual Family Day event.
