The New York University women's volleyball team won two of four matches at the New York State Challenge, which was held on Friday and Saturday, October 28-29, in Rochester, NY.
The Violets (19-14) defeated both St. Lawrence University and Nazareth College on Friday night, but fell to Rochester Institute of Technology and SUNY Fredonia..
In the first match on Friday, the Violets and Saints alternated victories with NYU finally prevailing in five sets over St. Lawrence 25-12, 16-25, 25-19, 19-25, 15-11
.
Alex Mao, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, led the NYU attack with 14 kills, 17 digs and three service aces,
Sarah Buckingham contributed 12 kills and eight digs.
Kaylee Schanda added 17 digs and three aces, while
Hope Bogle controlled the offense with 48 assists
.
"It was a slow start and a great finish," said head coach
Jolie Ward. "I'm proud of the team for claiming their first five-set victory this season."
In the second match of the evening, NYU swept Nazareth (23-11) 25-20, 25-19, 25-20
Once again, both Buckingham (11) and Mao (10) registered double-digit kills. Buckingham also had nine digs, while Mao added 11.
Schanda led the way with 19 digs and Bogle contributed 34 assists, two aces and two kills.
Kolby Warren also made her presence felt with five kills, four aces and two digs, as did
Jenn Korte with eight kills, three digs and two blocks.
"We played a controlled match against Nazareth," Ward explained. "Overall good work by Hope and strong play from Jen and Alex."
In Saturday's first match, NYU came up just short against RIT (14-25, 25-19, 25-21, 15-25, 15-10).
Both Buckingham and Mao continued their strong play, with each recording double-digit kill. Mao led the way with 21 and Buckingham had 14. The pair also produced double-digit digs (Buckingham 11, Mao 10).
Schanda led the team with 19 digs and four aces.
Bogle added 49 assists, nine digs and two kills.
In Saturday afternoon's final match, NYU fell to SUNY Fredonia (25-20, 22-25, 18-25, 25-16, 15-12).
Mao capped off her stellar tournament with a 17-kill, 24-dig performance, leading the Violets in both categories.
Bogle had 25 assists and 13 digs. Schanda recorded 21 digs and four aces.
Stephanie Yetter added 12 kills, while Warren also had double-digit kills (10).
"Hope performed well throughout the tournament, providing great defensive play and controlling the tempo of the game," Ward said. "Kaylee anchored the team defensively."
The Violets return to action when they host the University Athletic Association Championship on Friday and Saturday, November 4-5.
