After rallying to tie with less than six minutes left in regulation, the New York University men's soccer team fell 2-1 in double overtime at Carnegie Mellon University in University Athletic Association (UAA) play on Friday, October 28, in Pittsburgh, PA.
With the Violets (7-7-1, 2-3) trailing 1-0, Nimo Freitag Bergstroem netted the equalizer with just 5:19 left.
Paolo Luciano lined up for a free kick from just outside the box and took a shot that hit the Tartan (6-7-1, 2-3) wall and landed in front. A scramble ensued for the loose ball, and Freitag Bergstroem eventually knocked it in, pulling NYU even in dramatic fashion.
However, Carnegie Mellon recovered from allowing the Violets to come back and scored the game winner 2:32 into the second overtime period. Carmen Minella fed Kyle Young in the corner, and Chris Wysocki headed in Young's cross.
"We battled back well enough to equalize but fell short in the final stretch," said NYU head coach
Joe Behan. "We are disappointed but we still have games to play. We will work on bouncing back."
After a scoreless first half, the Tartans took a 1-0 lead in the 69th minute. Jakob Rohwer took a free kick from just beyond midfield that bounced at the 6, where it found its way in thanks to a screen provided by a pair of Carnegie Mellon players.
Just five minutes later, the Tartans had a golden opportunity to expand their lead but couldn't convert. Young was taken down in the box, drawing a penalty kick. But Wysocki's PK struck the crossbar.
For the game, Carnegie Mellon held a 15-8 advantage in shots, though NYU had a 4-3 edge in corners.
Forrest Sexton and Jonah Poster combined for eight saves in goal for the Violets, while Christopher Madden made three stops for the Tartans.
NYU returns to action on Sunday, October 30, when it concludes its UAA road trip at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. Game time is scheduled for 11:00 am.
