Virginia Duals Information

The New York University wrestling team won one of its two matches at the Virginia Duals in Hampton, VA, on Friday, January 7.

In their first match of the day, King (TN) College nipped NYU's grapplers 26-25. However, the squad rebounded with a 25-24 victory over St. Andrews Presbyterian (TN) College.

NYU led in the first match by as many as nine points as David Rice (165) recorded a pin and Clement Bommier (141) posted a major decision.

Heading into the final bout, NYU led 25-20. However, a pin by King's heavyweight Dondricus Anderson was worth six points and gave his team the 26-25 victory.

The next match was even closer, as both teams scored 24 points. However, since a winner had to be declared in the competition's dual-meet format, NYU earned an extra point and won the match “on criteria” due to posting three six-point victories to St. Andrews' two.

Rice and Bommier each recorded pins in the second match, as did Jakub Pawlowski (184).

“After the debacle on Wednesday at Johns Hopkins (a 40-3 loss), it was good to see the team come back and wrestle two tough matches,” said NYU head coach Bruce Haberli. “This is an outstanding event and our guys are wrestling alongside some of the best athletes in the nation. It's a great experience for our program.”

The Duals continue on Saturday.
