The New York University men's volleyball team knocked off two top-15 opponents to finish 3-1 at the 2011 Golden Dome Classic on Sunday, January 30, on the campus of Rutgers-Newark University in Newark, NJ.

"We had a strong showing this weekend," commented head coach Jose Pina.  "It was a bit disappointing that we didn't come out strong against Rutgers yesterday, but it was good for the squad to play a couple of ranked opponents and beat them.  It bodes very well for when we take on the EIVA and the top opponents in Division III."

The Violets (4-2), currently ranked #7 in the AVCA Division III Men's Coaches Top 15 Poll, began the day by pulling off a 3-1 (25-23, 25-21, 28-30, 25-20) win over the #5 Raiders of Rivier College.

Leading an offense that hit an impressive .342 for the match was captain Fran Hodgson, who tallied 17 kills and hit .600 while also putting back two assisted blocks.

Taylor Fauntleroy extended his double-digit kill streak to five matches by putting down 15 kills while also leading the team with seven digs on defense.

Nick Capriccio and Luke Hamlet were also in double-digits on offense.  Hamlet tallied 10 kills, while Capprico added 12 and hit a team-best .667.  He also added a team-high four assisted blocks.

For the Raiders, Jared Andreozzi led all players with 18 kills while also adding seven digs.

In the final match of the weekend, the Violets defeated the #15 Bearcats of Baruch College 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-21).

Hodgson once again led the offense, putting down a team-high nine kills while hitting .389.  On defense, he recorded four assisted blocks to surpass Jon Wintermeyer's career record of 318 and become the NYU assisted blocks leader during the rally-scoring era.  The senior now has 321 for his career.

On defense, Dylan Ramey put up seven digs to lead the Violets.

For the Bearcats, Pablo Oliveira tallied 15 kills and nine digs to lead the team.

The Violets return to action on Tuesday night when they host Vassar College.  First serve is set for 7:00 pm.

"We have another tough week coming up," concluded Pina. "But if we play like we played this weekend, we are in position for another good week."
