Grapplers Prepare for Metro/New England Duals

State Champions Magill, Galassi Look to Continue Strong Seasons

Steve Massey (197) has compiled a 12-9 record so far this season..

This Saturday, January 29, the New York University wrestling team will travel to Ewing, NJ, to participate in the Metro/New England Duals.

Three teams from the Metro Conference (NYU, Hunter College and The College of New Jersey) will each face off against three teams from the New England Conference (Williams College, Roger Williams University and United States Coast Guard Academy).  The Duals will be hosted by The College of New Jersey.

NYU will be looking to improve on last year's performance at the same event when the grapplers went 1-2, winning against Worcester Polytechnic Institute but falling to both Williams and Roger Williams.  Two years ago at the Duals, NYU beating Roger Williams and lost to Williams.

This year, the team is led by Matt Magill (165), Sabino Galassi (184) and Steve Massey (197), with records of 21-8, 14-12, and 12-9, respectively. Magill and Galassi are coming off of successful weekends at the New York State Championships, where they both finished high enough to earn All-State honors.

“This will be the first time we're able to field a full squad while not giving up a forfeit since the first half of the year, so we have expectations on doing well,” said assistant coach Corey Luce. “Our team has looked good this week in the practice room and we have worked on some things we needed to correct.”

The Duals begin at 10:30 am, when NYU will face off against United States Coast Guard Academy. The team will then match up against Williams and end the day versus Roger Williams. So far this season, NYU has posted a 2-6 record in dual meets, third at the Washington and Lee Invitational and fifth at the Simpson Invitational .
